You must have "preset" some phong breaks while trying to get the phong selection right.
Easiest way out: Uncheck "Use edge breaks" and try to select now.

But of course, some displacement in the materials was involved, too.

No prize for the mesh, I suppose, but in this case, the bad mesh actually helps.
