As for the plain effector - in this example you control the popping "appearance" with the Falloff percentage (in the falloff tab of the effector, currently at 50%). 100% will make them appear very smoothly, 0% will make them pop.

Nice trick, Mike. Alternatively, you could also keyframe the scale of your objects.
